Waited Blanket, Textile sculpture; cotton string with hexagonal steel nuts, 100 x 100 cm (size variable with install), 2022.
Waited Blanket consists of cotton string which has been crocheted into a blanket, with the addition of steel hexagonal nuts, of various sizes. It aims to highlight the contradictions between these materials in a very simplified way; the cold metal of the nuts contrasts the traditional warmth of the blanket; the weight the metal brings makes the object redundant as a blanket; an item which is supposed to be soft has been hardened. The abstracted nature of this piece aims to create a sensory experience, with the main focus being on the materiality, as opposed to the appearance of the work, whilst still holding the connotations of female and male dominated crafts, and the time and labour which goes into them.
